I find this concept interesting : “One of the biggest principles of body neutrality is experiencing exercise or movement as a way of engaging with life for your body, not to change your body,” https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/02/well/move/body-neutrality-exercise.html
Body neutrality has also been related to managing eating disorders :https://www.researchgate.net/publication/334619774_Using_body_neutrality_to_inform_eating_disorder_management_in_a_gender_diverse_world
Yes Vera... indeed! Thanks for sharing your insights 😀
Thanks for sharing these insightful articles, Jean.
Me, personally, I think that body neutrality is a more reasonable concept than body positivity.
Body positivity is necessary, especially in this digital (Instagram and TikTok) age, but it has its drawbacks. The reinforced focus on appearance and the debatable prevalence of overweight and obesity are at the forefront.
So why body neutrality? While body positivity aims to change the definition of beauty in society, body neutrality seeks to alter the value placed on beauty in said society.
To add on to the quote you emphasised. I think it's far more productive, sustainable and motivating if we shift our focus and exercise for our mental health than to look better.
